Sunday Offal Day: Mini Rijsttafel
Who knew chicken livers could be part of a rijsttafel? We certainly didn't, but it worked out WONDERFULLY (as a certain Harvard Law scholar to whom we sold our bookcases today would say).
Dadar Hati Ayam

Dadar Hati Ayam, Babi Kecap and Acar Timun.
Also, Lonny Gerungan's recipe for Babi Kecap is really wonderful, wonderful.

Before and after...

... the killing of small defenseless animals. In our defense, they were really small, not like a cow or something. Also, they were boiled in wine, which doesn't seem the worst way to go (I think cows usually get an iron stick up their arse, and get electrocuted --- we seem civilized in comparison, I would dare say).

Inspiration
We went to Brötchen for lunch today, and were inspired by the salmon with parsley mashed potatoes on their menu.By the way, everybody should go to Brötchen for lunch. Also, we discovered their cakes are great, and their breads are amazing: we had a chocolate cherry bread that the owner recommended for breakfast, but we enjoyed with gorgonzola and a glass of wine... Yum-o.

Freedom Fries War
A Dutch treat: Patatje Oorlog (literal translation: "Fries War"). It is the traditional food I eat when Anke is gone: meatz, friez and green leavez. The latter was spinach this time, sauteed very shortly in butter, and then steamed in its own (and the butter's) steam --- really tasty. The meatz was, of course, opossum steak.

Not a rabbit
Kaaspannekoek
In honor of Ellen's birthday, another old favorite from the Van Zuylen/Timmer household: kaaspannekoek. Frans has been making fun of the name forever, but never tried it until yesterday.Next time we visit, we will have to have Adrie show us how it's really done, because we didn't get it quite right, although the second try was pretty tasty.
