More pics from the beach

gDSC00402

Sorry for the delay in posting more photos: Surprisingly (or not, if you know the people I hang out with professionally), life on St Johns is quite busy and somewhat stressful. You would not say it from looking at it...

The conference so far has been very good, although just two days of it were enough to completely deplete all my mental resources.

gDSC00414

They may not look it, but these people work really hard.

I, on the other hand, feel more like this iguana -- you can have quite a fulfilling life just sitting in a tree and enjoying the sunshine...

I have arrived...

gDSC00399

... and I mean in that in more than one sense of the word. I am being a terrible wife to F, because on his

birthday, I made him get up at 6:15 to drive me to the airport.

gDSC00637

I flew first class to Saint Thomas, and from there was taken by boat to a resort which apparently charges a mere $600 per night.
gDSC00653

The resort is so large, you need a golf cart to get to your room.

My room is absolutely wonderful, right on the deserted beach (of course). Also, it has a complementary bottle of rum (of course). I can get used to this!

Birthday Foodz

Brussel Sprouts

There is no birthday foodz like Brusselz sproutz, even when served one day too early because the wife needs to go on a junket to St. Hans.

Sausauges and Sprouts

We added a little maple syrup to the walnutz and sproutz. Yum-o!

F's new look

All we need to do is start appliqueing whales to everything F owns, and buying some silver paint, and F will be good to go this summer!

See here for more inspiration.

Forgot to post these pictures from our trip to West Virginia.

Tourists

Ellen has already returned home. Here you can find some blog posts about her visit on her excellent blog.

Baked Apple Pancake

This was the energy bomb we enjoyed for breakfast in the park: a baked apple pancake, which must have been covered in sugar before it was put in the oven. Surprisingly good!

The Pig

The Pig

Tuncay knew that we needed to have brunch at The Pig before moving on to West Virginia.

The Pig

After the amazing Little Pig Platter, consisting of three types of cold cuts (two of which are pictured above), bread, dates and olives, both A and I were very much looking forward to the waffle with charred pork belly, as we could not imagine what that would be like.

The Pig

It was awesome.

The Pig

Ellen had another favorite: eggs Benedict; and Tuncay had the amazingly tasty pork cheeks. I just had dinner, but am getting hungry just thinking about all this.

Washington DC

Zenebach Injera

On our way to the snowy mountains in West Virginia, we stopped in Washington DC and visited Tuncay and Chad. No visit to DC is complete without stopping at Zenebach Injera.

Jamestown

Fire!

Thanks to Ellen we finally had an excuse to visit Jamestown, the first settlement of the English in the New World.

Jamestown

We learnt how to fire a musket, how the Injuns always have a fire going in their house, even in summer (against the humidity), and how to make our own leather.

Jamestown

We cannot wait to put our new knowledge to good use.

A Taste of American Culture

Colonial Williamsburg

Ellen is visiting, and we're taking her around to see all the wonderful sights that Williamsburg has to offer.

Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg

Not surprisingly, she found the vegetable garden the most interesting spot.

Colonial Williamsburg

Food

The last meal of 2012 was us showing off how well we have adapted to living in the South: we made beans, slow cooked ribs, collard greens, and corn bread.
