Ethiopian at Zenebech Injera

Ethiopian Food

This has been a weekend of amazing foods so far. Upon arrival in DC we went back to the Ethiopian Tuncay took us to before, and it was as good as we remembered.

Chengdu

Chengdu

After the wedding, it was time for some traveling! First destination: Chengdu, about 22 hours by train from Nanyang. We slept like babies in our soft berths.

Boaze

These are pictures of our first lunch in Chengdu.

Noodles

Chengdu lies in Sichuan province. This is easy to spot by all the chili oil in the different dishes.

Zhajiangmian

Zha Jiang Mian (炸醬麵)

Before flying to Nanyang, we had lunch with Amanda, her mother, her didi (older sister) and daughter and her meimei (younger sister). Everybody agreed on the fact that the best lunch in Beijing consists of zhajiangmian.

Lunner

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

Last weekend we went to cash in the fourth prize in the local photo competition at Casino Am Staden: a free brunch at a swanky restaurant!

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

It was a very interesting experience. We were welcomed, seated and asked whether we wanted a drink. Then we waited... Patience is a virtue that Germans seem to have perfected, and are happy to help you train yours. Suddenly soup was served, first for A, and after a little more waiting, another one for me.

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

After another wait, we were told that the appetizer buffet was ready. We saw that instead of brunch, we were going to have lunner: there was smoked salmon, poached salmon, chicory with orange, artichokes, salads, liver mousse on apple, fresh figs, tomato and mozerella, stuff I did not recognize, and more! And it was very good!

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

We both went back for seconds, and then sat back and relaxed...

This was quite enjoyable except for the fact that we had to be somewhere at 2, and we had not expected this to take so long. I think this was slow even for German standards. We asked the waiter, who told us we could eat as much as we liked until 3! That was not quite the answer we were looking for. Anyhow, after another waiting period we were informed that the main course buffet was ready to be raided.

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

This was really heavy stuff: duck, meatz, meat sauces, Knödel, Hoorische, brocolli, more salmon, etc.

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

This Knödel made from dark bread was really excellent.

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

The other main course dishes disappointed a little, sadly enough.

Brunch (or maybe Linner)

As did the dessert. Still, it was a very interesting experience, and the appetizer buffet was really good. I really enjoyed my fourth prize!

Purple

redbeandrink

We had lunch at Yan Ming Yuan this week, and had some of our favorites. Pictured above is the hot red bean juice, and we also had the duck with glutinous rice. I did not take a picture of the latter, and it turns out I did not need to either: see here. (No peas this time, though.)

Lunch at Sariwon in Seoul

A certain Israeli coworker claims that "Beijing has better Korean food than Korea". But then he has never been to Korea. Nor does he ever think before he talks. And even if he does, he still does not let that stop him from claiming complete nonsense things that may or may not be true.

Oops, going off on a tangent here. Back to food!

This here is an empty grate, to be filled with delicious meatz later.

These here are pickles (including best kimchi EVAH!) to entertain you while you wait.

And here are the meatiest meats you have ever had.

The meatz are delicious but only somewhat plentiful (depending on the number of digits you are willing to put up with on your check. We drew the line at 5). Therefore, these here are the filler materials you get to make sure you leave satisfied.

The first are cold noodles in cold water. They did offer wasabi-mustard to add flavor.

The second is a better choice: cold noodles with spicy tomato sauce. Although we still prefer the meatz.

On the road: Lunch

On Friday we rented a car to make our grand tour through China (ok, we barely made it out of Beijing district). We started our trip by going toward Jinshanling. On the way we had lunch at a random place that turned out to be a good choice.
