Cornell get together

Zenebach Injera

We drove up to DC for a mini-Cornell reunion, meeting up with some friends from grad school. We also took advantage of this opportunity to eat insane amounts of food. Even now, I am still in a bit of a food coma, so I will just leave you to contemplate the vast amounts of food we managed to put away.

Washington DC

Zenebach Injera

On our way to the snowy mountains in West Virginia, we stopped in Washington DC and visited Tuncay and Chad. No visit to DC is complete without stopping at Zenebach Injera.

Ethiopian at Zenebech Injera

Ethiopian Food

This has been a weekend of amazing foods so far. Upon arrival in DC we went back to the Ethiopian Tuncay took us to before, and it was as good as we remembered.

Runch

Ethiopian food

For our final lunch in Washington DC, we went to my favorite type of place: a small restaurant that was just focused on food, and had nothing in the way of decor, service, wine list, or anything at all that was not food. We had the best Ethiopian I have ever had. Just look at this injera:

(For contrast, these are our home made things that we shamefully call by the same name.)

Or this amazing gored gored:

The beef was rare, and the flavors were fantastic. They also had a dish which was 50% raw beef, but knowing that we had to take a flight the next day, we had to pass on that one.

Fazit: Amazing food!

African Foodz

Since we will be faced with the challenge of making mashed potatoes soon, we decided to get a little easy practice first, and make some African food.

We used our friend Marcus Samuelsson's cookbook, but since we had not used that for one and a half years, we had forgotten that we should not follow his directions too closely... So the injera were completely messed up, the meat was too chewy and the mashed sweet potatoes slightly too wet.

Maybe we should go out and buy that packet of instant mashed potatoes now. As Emma pointed out, how else will we add delicious chicken-y flavor and fried onion bits?

In the mean time, courtesy of Starbucks, we are already preparing for the next non-holiday (Christmas) with this little espresso candle. So cute!

Ethiopean

Another day, another lunch.

I guess we know better restaurants in NYC than Howard Karloff, on whose advise we came to this restaurant.

Sharp!

Not really clear in this resolution, but this photo is way sharper than our usual photos.

Here's why -- we found out we have a tripod!

It does make you wonder ... Are we taking our food photography a bit too seriously to make up for other areas in our lives where we are less successful??

Pancakes!

... with Ethiopian beef "stew". We doubled the amount of spices --- not recommended; this is a great recipe (if you follow it).

It is post #100 again! This time the food for post #100 did work out very nicely, so we are very happy that blogger gave us a second chance (by counting a couple of drafts as posts).

As you know, Frans REALLY likes pancakes.
Pancakes (injera) with a very spicy Ethiopian beef stew. What more could one want for the 100th post?
