Durian shortbread cakes at Guo Lin

Just posting the dessert as we were not so pleased with our other choices, and the pictures turned out quite badly too.

But here then (again) the glorious durian shortbread cakes from Guo Lin:

Home cooking

We ignored the fact that our kitchen is too small and did some good old home cooking: chicken satay and fries. Instead of kecap, which we could not find in our supermarket, we used a bit of hoi sin sauce in our satay sauce. It worked out quite nicely.

How Today Looks Ground Zero? -- The Movie Part 1

What Today Ate We (combined lunch and dinner edition)

Some of the foods today ate we. Man, the food here is good!!! So happy to be back, except for the cold and the smog and the street spitting and squat toilets and lack of toilet paper and smoking and general disgustingness of fellow citizens.




Really, the food alone easily makes up for it.

If you could not read the title of the post, it should still be pretty obvious where we are right now. Hmmmm, duck! This was the second one since our arrival, and we had another one tonight.

Next up the famous Macau bakery Koi Kei, with the best egg tarts in Macau (sorry, they were gone before we even thought about taking a picture --- they really are that good), and lots of great (peanut) candy and dried meat. Every Chinese person on the ferry back to Hong Kong was carrying a huge bag with stuff from this bakery.

Koi Kei and restaurante Litoral are two great reasons for visiting Macau.

Best food in 5 weeks

Today we took a day off to see the wondrous special region that is Macau. Macau is known for its food, and for good reason: this is where two of the world's best cuisines meet.

We had dinner at restaurante Litoral. According to their website they "combin[e] the testes of east and west". And indeed it takes balls to serve food this good.

We may never know, as this bird was thought to be extinct. Some people do know now however, as this quail was sold at a poultry market in the Philippines and subsequently eaten. Story here.

Being Dutch

Being Dutch means that you sometimes say "Kunnen we niet gewoon een broodje eten voor lunch?" ("Can't we just have a (ordinary) sandwich for lunch?") God knows why. Sandwiches are boring, especially those from Oliver's.


Being a little bit of an American too now means that when we see molten chocolate (20 mins preparation time) on the menu, it makes our mouth water. Unfortunately, America does these better than Hong Kong, although it was not too bad not too bad...

Guest blogger: team Wild explodes some bacon

Some time ago, we received a truly great guest post from Team Wild. Whence the delay in posting such a masterpiece? ...We can only give the very very lame excuse that we received it while we were still holidaying in Yunnan, and we subsequently forgot to add it to our blog once we arrived in Hong Kong. Maxim's (美心)

Another dinner at a mall restaurant today. Why you ask? Because Hong Kong is one gigantic shopping mall!

We had crispy barbecued pork, roast duck, string beans with minced meat, and tofu with seafood. Not too bad. However, food in Hong Kong pales in comparison to the food in our natural habitat. Only 5 more days and we'll go back!!!

We've found some restaurants in Hong Kong that we enjoy: simple and tasty food. Yesterday we went back to Hay Hay, which really has the best goose in Hong Kong (sadly, we forgot our camera). Today we went to a mall in Sha Kok, and had some nice vegetables and mushrooms, fish and pork stew.

Surprisingly yet conveniently, the best Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong is located around the corner from our hotel, unbeknownst to the rest of the world.
This is where you can eat really good roasted pigeon and get served beer by girls in the appropriate beer costume (with very short skirt).

Frites

Hong Kong has a good Belgian restaurant called Frites. Like everything else in Hong Kong, it is quite expensive, so we had the cheapish "express dinner" yesterday. Weirdly, it did not include FRITES, so Frans had to order his fix separately.
