Sunflowers

Sunflower

We encountered this field full of sunflowers on our way to and from la douce France.

This holiday, we had the best weather when we were in the car.

Ellen brought her amazing homemade granola, which meant that we are continuing our breakfast series uninterrupted!

Dinner at the Camp Site's Restaurant

Quiche

We were a little afraid that it would rain again on Sunday, so we decided to have dinner in the camping restaurant that day. We had quiche Lorraine and salad as starters...

... smoked pork with fried potatoes and even more salad as the main course...

... and of course tarte aux myrtilles for dessert.

The dinner made Christiaan smile:

Hiking and Lunch

Cheers

No pictures of the wonderful barbecued sausages and salad on the first day, as it rained quite a bit. The next day the weather did not look great either, but we went to La Schlucht anyway. Christiaan had been here before and was looking forward to going back to a restaurant that he had been to twenty years earlier. Sadly, it was closed, which was not too surprising given what Christiaan was telling us about the food: green beans that were preparing and left on a stove for multiple days before serving, amongst other specialties.

For lunch we had wine and beer (pictured above) and some great tourte:

Market in Gérardmer

Cheese

We went camping with Ellen and Christiaan last weekend in Vosges. On our first day (their third) we bought dinner on a market in Gérardmer. We bought cheeses, sausages for the barbecue and wine from this dude, who was enjoying his own wine and hitting on Ellen and Anke:

Sake

Sake Saarbrücken

Even though they did not respond to my very reasonable offer when they inquired whether they could use my photos for their menu and website, I still think Sake has the best Chinese food in Saarbrücken.

Pictured above is their Sichuan beef. We also had Chicken Meets Ginger, Siu Mai and Gherkins.

Healthy and cheap

According to Frans, our foodz today did not cost us more than 5 euros. It is cheaper than the mensa! Also, somewhat better tasting...

Same recipe for 25 years

...except perhaps for the added mace and cardamom, and the missing egg. Twenty-five years of practice do pay off!

Turkish Breakfast

Turkish Breakfast

Not pictured, but also very good: baguette with Ellen's strawberry-rhubarb jam.

Biking

Curry Wurst

Yesterday we went biking again. We started with a hearty brunch, consisting of a real German specialty: Curry wurst. This consists of sausage (of virtually any kind), with a sauce of ketchup and curry powder, dusted with more curry powder. A very misunderrecognized flavor in any cuisine, but the German: powdery.

Weizen

We had beer along the way. Anke was so smart as to take the train at some point, but I stupidly soldiered on. I finally got home at around 8, and was not really able to bike, walk or even move my neck or shoulders. Anke somehow knew this was coming and had already prepared a wonderful quiche.

Vote Early and Often!

Even More Sausages

It is that time again! We again need the help of our trusty readers: Frans wants to win prizes in another photo contest, and he needs your vote. For your convenience, here are the links to all the photos he submitted (just click on the photo, and then click on "Jetzt für dieses Foto Ihre Stimme abgeben"):

I don't understand their website, nor the voting rules, but it seems that you can vote as often as you want.

Buncis, Rice and Rendang

We used James Oseland's wonderful cook book again. I am convinced there must be a shorthand system for his recipes, so that every recipe is about 20 characters instead of several pages.

Breakfast!

Blini with Salmon and Caviar

We have a new resolve: to eat breakfast at least once a week. Here is the first: Blinis with salmon and caviar.

Biking in Beautiful Saarland

Saarland is Colorful

We needed exercise after Anke's birthday cake, and so we went biking again. Saarland is beautiful in summer.

For dinner, we went for the theme "children's party": spaghetti bolognese.
