Caturday

Leslie & April

Yesterday we had a Katerday rather than a Caturday, so these pictures are a day late.
  Caturday -- Impressionistic Edition

Possibly, the blurriness is caused by lingering blood alcohol as well, although we'll just blame the kittens for being overly speedy.

Let us introduce sisters April (on the left) and Leslie (on the right). They are not ours, but we are borrowing them from the Humane Society for two weeks. Only a week ago, they were very sickly, and we worried that we had another stinkpoes on our hands, with April not eating or washing, sneezing a lot, and having scabs all over her body.

But the antibiotics did their job, and these days they get up to a lot of mischief (and cuteness).

Tai Chi

Tai Chi

We spent a weekend in Hilvarenbeek, first and foremost because Ellen was having a birthday party with Austrian food. But as an added bonus there was a tai chi lesson (for A), and thus a photo opportunity for F.

I don't mean to brag...

... but I gave one kick-ass job talk today!

Now, let's just hope I get a job with good pay (either here or somewhere else) so I can invest in a cell phone that can take decent photos.

Looking for Answers...

Black Cat Crossed My Path

Mr. Bojangles has not found the answers to our two pop quizes either, but he as you can see, he is actively looking for them.

Today we put some frozen salmon with leeks in puff pastry:

Netherlands

We are in the Netherlands for about a week and are being fed the best foodz. We had some wonderful raw fish (again):

We had an evening of great Alsatian food at Wolfert and Saskia's: goose liver, Flammekueche, Munster and another cheese, all paired with great Alsation wines. We were enjoying ourselves too much to make pictures, sorry!

The next day we had the main event of our trip: Henk's party celebrating his working for the government for 40 years! More great foodz, actually too many to mention.

Then today: kermis. We enjoyed the Polyp:

Oh. My. God! -- The Sequel

I would not have held it to be possible, but indeed, nothing is beyond the staff of our institute: today's evening of toe-curling entertainment was even worse than last one...

The gaggle of Danish have arrived yesterday and today was the first day of the workshop. We had some fine talks during the day, and for dinner a so-called "welcome party" was planned. Due to Anke's successful hosting of the party for the distinguished guest, she is now the host-of-choice and was asked a week ago if she would be host again. She even said yes (she needs the material for this blog!) Her co-host for tonight was graduate student Hao -- who was apparently volunteered rather than asked.

Our new secretary (the one that did the somewhat inappropriate belly dance last time) was in charge of organizing the whole event. She got a little carried away perhaps. Here's what she sent Anke and Hao last night:
"This is final the program list for the reception. There are introductions about every performance. And in addition, I wrote something about the open part and end part. You could use your own words to say it. Just a tip for you. So, enjoy yourselves at the party."
Attached to the message was a complete write up of what she thought we should say, starting with "Good evening, distinguished guests, faculty and students, welcome to our reception banquet. It’s a great privilege for me/us to be the host of our performance tonight. "

This kind of took the fun out of the whole thing for Anke. No, I guess that is putting it too mildly. It really pissed me off! For Hao, the situation was much worse. The lovely secretary had told him to organize a game, and when the idea he had did not work out so well, she refused to let him drop it. In the end, we convinced him to screw her and drop it anyway. Still he was so stressed out that he ran off while walking over to the hotel with Frans, to make sure he was not late (nobody had even arrived at the venue). After the first introduction, when Anke went to talk to him, he immediately said "Did I say something wrong???" Poor guy!!!

According to Frans, the whole evening was somewhat hard to take because of all the pressure being put on the hosts and performers. Add to that the fact that the same secretary did her scarcely dressed belly dance plus this time also sang a song while wearing inappropriate dress. And finally, consider that all Danish visitors are male, plus very polite, so they did not know what to do. (I should add that most of the entertainment was not indecent -- just somewhat boring perhaps.)

Frans managed to add comic relief towards the end of the evening, when he gave a pop-quiz based on his driver's license exam. It was a great success, but according to Frans this was due more to the fact that everyone needed to get rid of the tension, than to the humor content of the presentation. I guess that says a lot...

Anyways, now that I have been able to vent; here are some photos from tonight. Sorry, no photos of the scantily dressed secretary -- we're too decent for that...

Uncomfortable looking Danes:

Fortunately, the Danes are good people. We managed to get over the trauma together with a bit of karaoke. Here's the most distinguished Dane, rocking out to "Girls just want to have fun" with Frans and fellow postdoc Elad.

Jazz and Mao's favorites

We were brave enough to give Beijing culture another try yesterday. We went to a piano recital by Yaron Herman in the Forbidden City Concert Hall.

Before the concert, we had dinner in the restaurant of a fan of Chairman Mao. We had Mao pork and Mao fish -- we're not sure if they're just some of Mao's favorites or if he actually came up with the recipes. Either way, we are very sorry to let you know that these two dishes must have been the worst food we've had in China...

The concert experience, on the other hand, exceeded my expectations. The audience was remarkably well-behaved. Coughing happened only at the appropriate moments (right after/during the last note). The man in front of us did talk to his wife without even trying to reduce the level of his voice, but a woman sitting close to him told him to shut up. Also, Yaron did not end his concert with a waltz by Strauss... Although the loud Pavarotti-esque music in the lobby during the intermission was somewhat reminiscent in its misplacedness.

Duck! (or Le Marais)

If you are wondering why we went to NYC, this is one reason: Le Marais.

We know and love their steak tartare (apologies for the crappy picture):

It turns out that they also make a mean duck, Canard au Citron:

Outing with ITCS and visitors

Some time ago, we had a seminar where the gods of theoretical computer science came down from their abodes in the heavens of the United States of America to visit our institute. After spreading their wisdom, all of us went on a tour of the Forbidden City and Lao She's tea house.

Back from the flu' -- part IV

We finally got our act together enough to do some grocery shopping, and here's what Frans made tonight: blurry (but organic and no hormones added) chicken and blurry (non-organic) brussel sprouts.
