Spinach and Sardines Pizza

Spinach and Sardines Pizza

It turns out that it is easier to eat for two, than to cook for one. Let's hope A is back before I weigh more than 100 kilos.

Pizza

Pizza!

We safely arrived in at Tuncay and Chad's, and told them we did not have pizza yet in the US. They took us to this great restaurant, where we had lamb meatballs with almonds, and salted cod croquettes as starters, and then some great pizzas. Pictured above is a pizza with fresh sardines, just one of the things that were really good there.

Flammkuchen and More Pizza

Flammkuchen

Flammkuchen

This Flammkuchen came out extremely well. Maybe because I used rapeseed oil to make the dough.

Pizza!

It also worked really well for making pizza. One side of the pizza contained anchovy, onion, pepper, capers and mozzarella, the other side onion, smoked ham, mozzarella and arugula.

Mango and Carrots

We also made Ghillie's mango and carrot dish.

Pasta

And from recipes we got from Ellen, we chose this pasta with fennel and arugula.

Almost up to Date

Laksa

A quick post of some foodz we ate in the last weeks, but that I hardly remember. Pictured above is James Oseland's amazing laksa, where we again used barbecued chicken for extra smokiness.

Mayonnaise

This is the mayonnaise we bought in Belgium, thanks to Ellen's great advice. We wonder whether it will last more than a month.

Potatoes

Some potatoes to eat with the mayo.

Egg Salad

Some eggs and bread to eat with the mayo.

Pizza

Disgusting delivered pizza.

Couscous and Orange Salmon Pizza

Couscous

"Pizza" with "Salmon"

Not on the same day, of course, that would be weird.

And yesterday, another little bike ride:

Backlog: Last week(end)

I bet everyone is very interested to know that last weekend we had stone-oven baked pizza and bitterballen in Sanlitunr.

Bitterballen in Beijing

Actually, yesterday we also ate bitterballen, but this time in the expat-heaven called Shunyi. We were quite surprised to be allowed into Shunyi district without the requisite gaggle of noisy blond children. Also, we will most likely never go back there again because we don't like noisy blond children.

We also cooked at home a few times recently. Made the old "so-good" roasted red peppers with feta and preserved lemon and, when Frans was suffering from what we hope was H1N1, home made tomato-pepper soup.

Finally, a picture taken from the cab last weekend.

Oh, and then there is this photo, which was already posted earlier. Frans received an email last week that his presence is requested at the award ceremony of the photo competition to which he submitted this photo. So exciting!!!
Although we're a bit disappointed that there are 400 finalists and only 50 people will actually win anything.

Is God punishing me for...

... for having been enjoying the wonderful foods in Beijing too much or for having caused the death of too many ducks during the past few weeks in Beijing? I don't know, all I know is that the food in Karlsruhe SUCKS!!!

At the conference they serve basic pasta, lentils and carrots (catering to the Indians), and knackwurst or chickenfilet in gravy. They are very careful to serve it lukewarm and too make sure that it has no detectable flavours.

Outside the conference, things are definitely way better, but still deplorable. This is the pizza I had yesterday which made me smell for 12 hours:

Not many complaints about the company fortunately, which is saying a lot for a conference of computer scientists.

Tonight I had dinner at a fancy restaurant. I have stopped taking pictures, I am so underwhelmed. Good thing I am flying back on Thursday (I am even looking forward to the airplane food!).

Moving

Packing up the last few boxes in blistering heat is no fun.

But driving in a big yellow Penske truck is!

Our last Sindbad's pizza :(

We spent our last night in the U.S. of A. at a camp site in the Poconos.

In the morning, we drove to the warehouse in NYC, dropped off our boxes, and then dropped off ourselves at JFK airport. We are hoping to see our belongings again on August 6 in Beijing.

There's a first time for everything...

... and today was the first time we ordered pizza delivery. (Really?? Yes, really!)

Of course we chose a bit of an inopportune evening for this first-time-pizza-delivery, since the "super" bowl has everyone ordering pizza today. So we had to curb our hunger for an hour by making some fries (since being dutch means we always have enough potatoes around).

Eventually, our pizza did arrive. And of course we already knew this, but Sindbad makes a pretty darn good pizza.

Pizza

Because some of us had built up a feta aversion, and hardly any restaurant was open because of a heavy snow storm, we had authentic Bulgarian pizza on our last night.

Also, what today ate b.t.:

Special Mix, 3 irresistible flavors, irresistibly fun, loaded with lots of fun shapes, so b.t. never gets bored.

Purple Room

Mmmmm, wild boar is no bore.

Brasa, Seattle

Our first night in Seattle, we had "tapas" at restaurant Brasa. Highly recommended and insanely cheap (at happy hour).

(Besides pizza, there was also squid, very tasty grilled veggies, oysters, hummus. Check out their website.)

Mallorcan pizza

At least, that's what Appie Heijn claims.
