Flying Time Intermezzo: Philadelphia

Apologies for lightposting (again)! I hope I can make it up by starting this blog post with wonderful Chinese food.



Last weekend was time for our biweekly get together, this time in Philadelphia. Our only goal for this weekend was to have good food. We succeeded with flying colors. On Saturday evening we went to Barbuzzo (no pics), where inspired Mediterranean food was prepared with balls and love. We had wonderful trout, meatballs, acorn squash and bread pudding.

Then for breakfast the next morning, we went to Chinatown, specifically Heung Fa Chun Sweet House. We asked what was good, and got a soft tofu and a noodle dish. The soft tofu dish (first pic) was out of this world!



Then it was time for some mind food, so we visited the Rodin museum.

One more food pic: we then went to Bud & Marilyn, which is advertised as retro-American. This fried chicken was another big hit.



Another biweekly get together that worked out terrifically!

First Day of Foodz

If you thought the last few posts contained too many pictures, I am afraid it may only get worse. If you did not, you are in for a treat.

Of course, our main purpose of going to China was attending Amanda and Liu Ke's wedding.

But that did not stop us from having copious amounts of wonderful Chinese food.



This is our dinner the first day.



Even the xiaolongbao were there.

And some Thai beef, that nobody except me liked.



And what is a dinner without duck?



I will just remark here that we were in China for 3 weeks.

Singapore!

I landed in Singapore about 4 hours ago, and I am loving it!

I've probably broken a dozen laws already (is there a law against jaywalking, because I seem to be the only one doing it?!), but this place does not seem half as uptight as I thought it might be.

My taxi driver honked and swore at another driver who made a right turn from the left-turn-lane, and then threatened to throw an egg at her. He had a plastic bag filled with raw eggs hanging from his steering wheel just for that purpose! (Unfortunately, the latter is not quite true, but it is a good story.)


My hotel for tonight is in Little India. Tomorrow, I am moving to Orchard Road, which is apparently filled with high-end shopping malls, but today, I am still paying for my hotel myself, so I am in a lively but somewhat seedier area.


At the recommendation of Damla, I had dinner at Banana Leaf Apolo. It was right across from this little field.
It was a great restaurant with long wooden tables shared by different groups of customers. The people next to me on the left were Chinese, and on the right were Indian.


Unfortunately, our old camera refuses to focus (and also, I am not Frans), so the photo really sucks. The food, however, was awesome! I ordered way too much, and had fish curry (slightly sour, very very delicious) and chicken masala (also extremely good, with really beautiful spices).


I tried to use lime juice to encourage my stomach to digest faster, but to no avail, and I only managed to finish about two-thirds of the food.

A nice stroll around Little India followed dinner, and now I am back in my windowless hotel room, getting ready to go to bed.

Profi Chinese Food

Long time no see at our favorite Chinese restaurant in Saarbrücken, with the unfortunate name Sake. The food was even better than I remembered!



We had the usual Hong Kong duck and Ginger Meets Chicken.

To the untrained eye, this may look like a bowl of puke, but our more discerning readers will no doubt recognize this Kyoto delight of roast chicken with egg sauce.

Time for Another Random Restaurant

We felt lazy, and just wanted to have some food whilst biking back to the hotel. This restaurant looked nice from the outside.



We enjoyed many small dishes: some salad with fish...



... some barbecued peppers and meatz...
